"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" - You will not be able to stay home, brother. You will not be able to plug in, turn on and cop out- Young, impressionable, willing, even if by default ones found himself needing inspiration because the world is full of rage, and unrest, the very understanding of revolution; the reality that revolution needed to be applied was my coming of age moment. Thirty something years old, now, cometh 2016 I realise the revolution was televised, and I missed it, as with the many others who ponder their prevalent beliefs; such as the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the availability of energy and international terrorism close to home, the way the T.V. remote changes channel every time poverty, hunger and the lack of drinking water still running freely from my western tap is just too much for conscience to bare, not to mention fear of a global economic collapse, and global warming, and #Black Lives Matter and because they do #Lives Matter thought to walk the same platform. And regarding the latter, and all the latter’s before that and the ones yet to mention, considering the circumstances the revolution was televised, and we missed it, and neither did the conscious partake and now dead to the world is focused on uninspired.
The revolution - to hold this enthusiasm - was so very apparent back when Soul2Soul came with the idea that they were the original Funki dreads, it was a moment and a movement to take notice of, and move in the direction of away from the limitations of the mainstream, simultaneously embracing all things about a vibe dancing out feelings at the Africa Centre, for example.
We missed and we miss this enthusiasm to change where we are now, back then what the movement taught us, and inspired many to do was to attain, through creative rebellion realise the very essence of ‘our’ lives, what makes us tick making sure it ticked over and only because the benevolence, i.e. the human spirit was something to aspire to. We miss that; I say, talking on behalf of the others who sound just like me; I miss that, and it’s something we represented as what was going on all around, and it alienated nobody, even if we were defined by complexions, cultures, origins and gender specifics there was a universal feeling that such determination, ingenuity and just sheer love was what mattered most. The revolution; was televised, and there are no re-runs here, only now will the revolution be live, and needs to be.
